The Best Fried Chicken in Virginia?
Besides great views, Nelson County is known for its wineries, breweries, and now a growing number of cideries and distilleries. Located off US Route 29 or VA Route 151, Nelson has myriad of watering holes for those adventurous enough to find them.
Afton Mountain Vineyards is one of Virginia's first farms with vines being planted in 1978. Located at an elevation of nearly 1,000 feet, Afton shields their vines from the elements of the weather and offer beautiful views for their visitors. The tasting room, which is open year-round, offers $10 tastings of 11 wines, a friendly and knowledgeable staff, and a beautiful patio with panoramic views where you can enjoy your glass or bottle of wine surrounded by mountains. If you want to take your winery trip to the next level, Rebel Run @ Afton Mountain offers one-of-a-kind horse riding camps and trail rides for kids and adults. No experience necessary, though you might want to watch how much wine you have before your mosey off so not to get a “HDI” (that’s , horse riding under the influence. Jokes).
Another winery you’ll want to visit is Cardinal Point Vineyard and Winery. Cardinal Point opened in 2002 and featured breathtaking views of Afton Mountain. The winery has a tasting room featuring 12 wines and $10 tastings, and an outdoor seating area to enjoy your wine. Family owned and operated, Cardinal Point welcoming feels like you’re visiting the family farm .
Once you’ve visited a few wineries, it’s time for some grub! Touting “the best fried chicken in Virginia,” everyone needs to stop by Mac’s Country Store. Located in Roseland, the store is a local favorite and serves breakfast, lunch and dinner and features antiques in the store.
Avoid rushing off and stay for the night! You can enjoy a more amenity rich stay at one of the many rentals offered by Wintergreen Resort both on the mountain and in the valley at their Silver Creek area, or stay at one of the many locally owned and operated B&B’s like the history-rich Orchard House. What used to be a farmhouse used as a vacation home is now an apple/peach orchard that is managed by three generations of the same family. Explore Nelson while staying here, take a walk through their one-acre vineyard, or sit back and relax in their hammocks or Adirondack chairs around their firepit.
